Shadow Of Terror: Decoding ISIS's Role in Russian Bloodshed

The attack on Moscow today was the deadliest attack after the awful bombing at Domodedovo Airport in 2011.
The Islamic State group has asserted responsibility for the harrowing mass shooting at a concert venue in Moscow, Russia. The assault resulted in the loss of at least 62+ lives and left over 100 others wounded.

According to reports, armed individuals initiated gunfire at a rock concert hosted at Crocus City Hall, situated in a northern suburb of Moscow. Clad in camouflage attire, the attackers unleashed gunfire on attendees and allegedly deployed a grenade or incendiary device, causing widespread chaos and alarm.

The tragic incident unfolded during a performance by the band Picnic, transforming an evening of enjoyment into a scene of anguish and devastation. The concert hall, nestled within one of Russia’s expansive shopping and entertainment hubs, quickly became engulfed in flames, exacerbating the calamitous situation.

Russian authorities have launched a terrorism inquiry into the occurrence, with President Vladimir Putin monitoring developments closely. The National Guard is actively engaged in the hunt for the culprits, while emergency response units race to aid the wounded and manage the aftermath of the shooting.

This heinous act stands as one of the deadliest terrorist incidents in Central Russia in recent memory, reminiscent of the tragic bombing at Domodedovo Airport in 2011. The magnitude of the violence underscores the threat posed by extremist factions like ISIS, emphasizing the crucial need for international collaboration in combating terrorism.

ISIS-K, also known as the Islamic State Khorasan Province, is a faction of ISIS operating in Afghanistan and Pakistan. It has targeted Afghan security forces, politicians, religious minorities, US and NATO forces, and international agencies.

Established in January 2015 during ISIS's zenith in Iraq and Syria, it recruits jihadists from both Afghanistan and Pakistan, including defectors from the Afghan Taliban. "Khorasan" denotes a historical region encompassing parts of present-day Afghanistan and Pakistan. ISIS-K stands accused of numerous atrocities, including assaults on schools, hospitals, and even a maternity ward, where pregnant women and nurses were reportedly shot dead.

Primarily there are two reasons why Russia was attacked?

  1. Russia was the greatest ally of the Assad regime and waged proxy wars with ISIS during the Syrian Civil War.

  1. Afghanistan has introduced a new military attaché to the Afghan embassy in Moscow lately, which has been accepted by Russian authorities.
